In Other Miles

Photography, Art Exhibition

In Other Miles, curated by Cameron Patricia Downey, is an exhibition that resides and ruptures from the junction of The Blues, repetition and departure. Inspired by Downey’s studies of George. E Lewis and Tyrone S. Palmer, ‘In Other Miles’ whirls around the world’s end as a political praxis and necessity whilst grounded in a Blues ethic. i.e. an exploration of how repetition, mourning, and the romantic get us to and through the end of an Anti-Black world.

With this inspiration, I created Take You With, a digital photographic exploration of strengthening a once-tethered connection through spirit and practice. With inspiration stemming from a new living space, gentle healing, and an old photo album, I created a self-portrait story piece that highlights the mental disorientation that can come from grieving and conforming, represented in each piece through articles of clothing and movement. The addition of the smaller, older prints of my late mother create an internal connection that is bound by devotion, style and tenderness. This affection is radiated in each of the self-portraits and serves as a beam of light within a routine that is continuous and without a finish line.
