Grand Marais Art Colony Residency
Photography, Art Residency
This residency was created in partnership with the Grand Marais Art Colony and PF Studios, a ten day visit up to the wintery north shore. The intentions are to provide the artists much needed space for rest and reflection, and to provide access to the GMAC space + resources for artmaking.
For myself, my intentions were to research and expand my personal photography practice, specifically within geometry and color in my self-portraits. I’ve loved the progression I’ve made over the last several years, and I was looking forward to being away from the hustle and bustle of life to spend time near Lake Superior.
Adapting my practice to new surroundings has been a bread and butter throughout my journey. Finding my stride in the GMAC studio was swift and inviting, my ideas almost effortlessly flowing one after another. I credit these mainly to my preparation leading up to the residency, and the collaborative energy from working alongside my studio mates. Having the opportunity to learn more about their processes towards their own practice, and receiving help from them when needed would lend towards a positive experience crafting work in the studio.
The residency left me with a lasting impact that comes from creating and developing community with other artists, and the power that comes from doing it in new locations away from your home. The north shore location offered much space for peace and healthy isolation, allowing for a moment to ground myself and appreciate the growth of my art practice. It also affirmed my love for residency opportunities and to explore what can be created around the world.
